More About Me

Since receiving my doctoral degree in history in 1998, I have worked with students in a variety of capacities at the secondary and collegiate levels for more than thirty years.‍ ‍

For most of my career, I have taught 9th grade history, which is typically the first part of World History focusing on the rise of ancient and medieval civilizations throughout the world. Since this course is an introduction to high school history, students are introduced to historical reasoning, the close analysis of texts, both primary and secondary sources, and the development of oral and written arguments, I have often tutored students who have needed additional assistance in learning these basic study skills.‍ ‍

Beyond the 9th grade, I have typically taught AP courses. The required courses are 10th Grade AP World History: Modern and 11th Grade AP U.S. History. The other AP classes that I have taught on a regular basis are electives for predominantly 11th and 12th grade students: AP European History, AP Art History, AP U.S. Government, and AP Comparative Government. In all of these courses, in addition to teaching the essential content, I spend a significant amount of time working on strategies for approaching multiple choice questions, practice writing free response questions in the various disciplines (short answer, long essays, and document-based essays), close analysis of works of art, data tables and charts, and cartoons and other types of historical images.

My students have traditionally done exceptionally well on the AP Exam, with the majority of students earning a 3 to pass, and many earning a 4 or 5.

In my experience, some students prefer to work in person while others prefer online on Zoom or related platforms. I can accommodate either preference.
